Résumé
The thesis studies Libor, the central rate of the interbank market, which was manipulated during the 2000s. After a precise description of its history and of the relations between actors of the manipulation, the example of Libor allows us to mobilize, in a comparative perspective, three paradigms of economics and social sciences. The first chapter focuses on an economics of conventions analysis. It describes the manipulation as a convention, a self-reinforcing norm within the group formed by the financial actors manipulating the indicator. The second chapter proposes a theoretical model of information economics. Considering manipulation size as a way to discover the controlling activity of the supervisor, it models the dynamics of the fraud. The third chapter uses the sociological model of “polities” to show how the genesis and decline of conventions can be theorized based on the arguments proposed by the different actors in the history of Libor.
La thèse étudie le Libor, taux central du marché interbancaire qui a été manipulé au cours des années 2000. Après une description précise de son histoire et des relations entre les acteurs de la manipulation, l’exemple du Libor permet de mobiliser, dans une optique comparative, trois paradigmes d’économie et de sciences sociales. Un premier chapitre propose une analyse d’économie des conventions. Il décrit la manipulation comme une convention, norme autorenforçante au sein du groupe formé par les acteurs financiers manipulant l’indicateur. Un deuxième chapitre propose un modèle théorique d’économie de l’information. La manipulation permettant de découvrir si le superviseur effectue activement des contrôles, on modélise la dynamique de la fraude. Un troisième chapitre recourt au modèle sociologique des cités de justification pour montrer comment on peut, à partir des argumentaires proposés par les différents acteurs de l’histoire du Libor, théoriser la genèse et le déclin des conventions.
