Study of crystallization and trans-crystallization during the processingof glass fiber reinforced polypropylene

The objective of this thesis is to study the influence of processing parameters, particularly the cooling rate, on the morphology and mechanical properties of pure and glass-filled polypropylene. A study of the damage as a function of the semi-crystalline morphology of the polymer and of the fiber-matrix interface/interphase was conducted. During the non-isothermal crystallization phase at different cooling rates, a variation in the sizes and morphology of the crystalline entities was observed at the pure polymer and at the transcrystalline phase at the fiber-matrix interphase. A follow-up of the evolution of the microstructures as a function of time has been performed. This allowed to develop a model describing the crystallization kinetics. Loaded and unloaded polypropylene thin films with controlled microstructures were produced and mechanically stressed in different ways and the deformation and damage phenomena were analyzed in situ using a micro-traction machine developed in the laboratory. The dependence of the damage mechanisms on the spherulite diameters and the mechanical test conditions was established. The deformation mechanisms and intra and inter spherulitic damage were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively according to the controlled morphologies produced for the polymer and for the composite, especially at the level of the transcrystalline phase. The results obtained clearly showed an increase of the interfacial adhesion with the decrease of the cooling rate and the increase of the thickness of the size of the transcrystalline phase. Moreover, it was shown that the development of the transcrystalline phase due to the presence of a fiber produced an increase in the nucleation time and a decrease in the crystallization kinetics which result in a decrease in the average size of the spherulites and consequently an increase in the modulus but a facilitation of the matrix damage. All these results suggest ways to improve the mechanical properties of semi-crystalline thermoplastic matrix composites through the control of the parameters of the elaboration process influencing the crystalline and transcrystalline morphologies which condition the deformation and the local damage of the various phases.
