Study of the cutting of biocomposites by a jet of pure cryogenic nitrogen and added with abrasive particulate charges

This Ph.D project is focused on the study of a new machining technology based on a cryogenic nitrogen jet for the cutting of biocomposites. This machining technique is promising for synthetic composites. However, applying such a cutting technology to a material whose structure is multiscale and complex requires an in-depth study to determine the characteristics of the tool/material contact as well as its impact on the machined material. This Ph.D work proposes first an exploratory study to validate the feasibility of this cutting process in the case of biocomposite machining by considering a jet of pure nitrogen and a jet of nitrogen charged with abrasive particles. A statistical study is then conducted to analyze the effect of the process parameters on the machinability of biocomposites. The most significant parameters of the nitrogen jet cutting process were considered at the end of this Ph.D work to conduct an experimental thermomechanical analysis on an instrumented bench in order to be able to identify the physical phenomena that are the origin of the cutting behavior of biocomposites in a cryogenic environment. The results of this work showed the necessity of introducing abrasive particles to increase the material removal rate and improve the biocomposite machinability by the addition of the abrasion mechanism to that of erosion. During a cutting operation by a cryogenic fluid jet, the stiffening of the different biocomposite phases through a thermomechanical effect contributes to an improvement in its machinability by increasing the efficiency of the fibers' shearing while making it less dependent on the size of the contact with the abrasive tool. Nevertheless, the cryogenic temperatures reached during the nitrogen jet cutting contribute also to the embrittlement of the interfaces between the fibers and the matrix, which favors their break under a thermomechanical cutting load.
