Résumé

The midwave infrared (MWIR) is a spectral range of high interest for many applications. However, their development is hindered by the lack of cheap, compact, efficient and robust sources. Incandescence is an interesting solution satisfying most aforementioned economic constraints. Yet, when it comes to physical properties of the emitted light, it suffers from severe drawbacks with a broadband, unpolarized and isotropic emission. Besides, thermal emitters are often bulky, therefore limited by thermal inertia. In fact, these limitations are not fundamental ones and can be overcome by engineering thermal emission using the latest tools developed in the fields of nanophotonics and nanofabrication. In this thesis, we design, optimize, fabricate and characterize several incandescent sources allowing for emission in the MWIR with a controlled polarization and emission spectrum, and sustaining modulation of the signal well beyond the kHz range. In a first part, we present a source optimized to have a narrowband emission spectrum around 5 microns with a high degree of linear polarization. Fast modulation of the emitted signal is controlled by the temperature of thin emitters which can cool down through conduction to a colder substrate. Control over the emissivity spectrum is obtained by using a Salisbury screen resonator and choice over the polarization state is achieved by using a metasurface consisting of metallic wires. We also study the efficiency of such temperature modulation-based sources and determine the relative importance of free parameters such as total emitting area or modulation type. In a second part, we propose a source optimized to emit in the MWIR with a high degree of circular polarization, in addition to sustaining fast modulation. It uses the same architecture as the first proposed source, benefiting from the same advantages in terms of modulation and tunability of the emissivity spectrum. Control over the polarization state is obtained by using nanoresonators having a different coupling to left or right circularly polarized light in the far-field. Experimental characterization of the polarization state is achieved through the development of a novel efficient Stokes polarimeter operating in the MWIR.
