Effets d'une restriction alimentaire pendant le dernier tiers de la gestation des chèvres sur le développement du comportement alimentaire de leur progéniture

Abstract : Negative energy balance in late-pregnancy can cause pathological problems to the dams. Moreover, foetal growth and metabolism can be impaired, resulting in permanent physiological adaptations in the offspring. This is called foetal programming. In goats, feed restriction during the last third of pregnancy reduced weight gain, increased body reserve mobilization and increased the time they spent looking for feed. Between birth and 10 weeks of age, the metabolism of kids born to feed-restricted dams was only slightly modified. Although smaller and lighter at birth, they caught up the first week after birth but their adipose tissue mass was lower than controls. Feeding behaviour and emotional reactivity were not modified. An interaction between offspring sex and maternal feed restriction was not systematically demonstrated. Over two years of age, female kids born to feed restricted dams remained lighter and had a lower body condition score than controls. The reactivity of their HPA axis was increased while their emotional reactivity was not modified. At 12 and 21 months of age, spontaneous feed intake was increased compared to controls. The effects of maternal feed restriction during pregnancy observed in new-born kids quickly disappeared. However, feeding behaviour was modified at adult age.
